The exhibition ‘NL = Nieuwe Luxe’ (NL = New Luxury), a sequel to “dutchness’ in Milan, was to be seen from May 22nd to August 23rd in NAiM/ Bureau Europa in Maastricht. During this exhibition a workshop was given by Alexander van Slobbe with the same perspective as the exhibition : a new vision on design, with a greater focus on the process with which a product was created, more focus on the traditional quality and a greater emphasis on the local or regional context.
Van Slobbe feels that the traditional bridal gown is the ‘high point of old luxury’, and expected that the students would drastically change their old-fashioned ideas about the wedding dress.
In only four days, and with only a tailor’s dummy, paper, white cotton, staples and tape, the students developed another perspective on the wedding dress. According to Van Slobbe, it is all about continuous trying out of ideas, whereby inspiration is stimulated by coincidences. “We are often interested in the end product,” he says, “but for the designer, the true idea of luxury is found in the potency; in the opportunity to continually reconsider possibilities.” _text from Design Academy Eindhoven catalog 2009
